Sand bottom, no reef, no crowd
Carita is not a world-class wave and nobody is going to pretend otherwise. What it is, is one of the easiest places in Java to learn — and one of the emptiest.
The break is four hundred metres from the front door, over sand. Mellow shoulder-high waves on an average day, chest-high on a good one. You will often have it to yourself, which is not something you can say about anywhere in Bali.
The swell is most consistent from May to September, during the dry season. October to April is smaller and rainier, but perfectly good for learning — and the house is quieter.
Complete beginners and improvers. If you are already surfing overhead reef breaks, come for the volcano and the park instead, and treat the surf as a bonus.
Six boards live on the rack by the door — soft-tops for learning, a couple of funboards, and a shortboard for when it picks up. Use is included with every room, for as long as you stay.
