Getting here
Carita is 150 km west of Jakarta. Three hours if the road is kind, four if it is not.
By car
The simplest way. Take the Jakarta–Merak toll road to Serang, then the coast road south through Anyer and Cilegon. We can arrange a private car from the airport or anywhere in Jakarta.
By bus
Buses run from Kalideres terminal in Jakarta to Labuan, which is fifteen minutes from the house. Cheap, slow, and an experience in itself. Tell us your arrival time and we will pick you up in Labuan.
When to come
April to October is dry season: reliable sun, the best swell, and the boats run to Krakatoa most days. November to March is wetter, greener and much quieter — rain usually comes in the late afternoon and clears.
Money
Indonesian rupiah, cash. There are ATMs in Labuan, fifteen minutes away. QRIS works in the house and in most warungs. We take the balance in cash or QRIS on arrival.
Language
Indonesian and English in the house. A little French too. In the village, a few words of Indonesian go a very long way.
What to bring
Reef shoes are unnecessary — it is sand. Bring sunscreen (expensive here), mosquito repellent, and a dry bag if you plan on the boat trips. Everything else you can buy in Labuan.

Questions people ask
Do I need to be able to surf?
No. The break is over sand and forgiving, and most guests who take a lesson stand up on the first morning. If you have never touched a board, this is a good place to start.
Is it safe, with the volcano?
Anak Krakatau is monitored continuously by the Indonesian volcanology agency, and boats only go out when the alert level allows. The house itself is in the village, not on the shoreline. When trips cannot run, we refund them in full.
Can I pay by card?
Not yet online. We take a deposit by bank transfer or payment link, and the balance in cash or QRIS when you arrive. Card payment on the site is coming.
Will I see a rhinoceros in Ujung Kulon?
Almost certainly not. There are around sixty left, they are shy, and the park is enormous. What you will see is a rainforest with no one in it, crocodiles, hornbills, deer and macaques.
Is there wifi?
Yes, in the house. It is good enough for messages and email, and occasionally good enough for a video call. Do not plan on uploading anything large.
Can you pick us up from Jakarta airport?
Yes. A private car is 1,200,000 IDR per vehicle for up to four people with luggage. Tell us your flight number and we will be there.
